Crain.Crain's stories become captivating as they faithfully navigate the reader through his many historical wartime encounters. For example, in World War II, Crain was there for the Liberation of Paris Parade on August 29, 1944, the bloody battle of the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Colmar Pocket of Alsace.  In the Korean War, Crain tells us the story about his Battalion Commander service with the "Cotton Balers" of the famed 7th Infantry Regiment and the time of the Battle of the Outposts where the Communists and the UN Forces were struggling to improve their defenses along the 38th Parallel.  Then, as war erupted once again in Southeast Asia, Crain tells us about his duty as a Military Advisor to the 9th Vietnamese Division Commander. These early Vietnam era stories include Vietnamese reaction to the news of President Kennedy's assassination, the death of Ngo Dinh Diem, and many intriguing anecdotes about the Vietnamese General Staff and the Coup d' Etats suffered by Vietnam during Crain's tour of duty. Crain's wartime stories include candid personal insights about his superior officers, fellow commanders and those serving with under his command.

Following each of his wartime engagements Crain advances a colorful mixture of compelling personal stories dealing with the disparate experiences of a peacetime soldier. Many stories fondly tell of the good times with warm and inviting humor while others go on to tell of the frustration sometimes felt by this dedicated career officer because of shifting politics and culture.

Whether a serious military history buff or simply a lover of real-life stories, you will enjoy this book as its collection of alluring short stories passionately reveal how one man who enlisted in the U.S. Army truly found his "niche in life."
