Colonel Crain was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, on 18 March, 1918.
He attended Officer's Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia and was
commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry on 19 October, 1942.During WW II Col. Crain participated in 5 campaigns in the European Theater as a Company Commander with the 112th Inf. Regt., 28th Inf. Division. During the occupation he served with the 34th Inf. Regt., 24th Inf. Division in Japan.
In Vietnam, Col. Crain was assigned as the Senior Advisor of the 9th Vietnamese Inf. Division. Col. Crain joined the 2nd Armored Div. and assumed command of the 2nd Brigade in August 1964. Col. Crain's decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit w/oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star w/2 oak leaf cluster, Korean War Medal, National Order of Vietnam, 5th Class, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. His education includes a BS Degree from University of Maryland, MA Degree from George Washington University. His Military Education included the Infantry School, Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. |
