"Early one morning, one of our radio operators shook me awake and told me that he had just heard that President John F. Kennedy had been shot and fatally wounded in Dallas, Texas. I asked him what time it was and he answered, 0400. The day was 23 November 1963 in Vietnam.

My immediate thought was "What else could possibly happen to us?" Vietnam was virtually in turmoil with the recent coup and death of President Ngo Diem.

I notified Colonel Quang as soon as possible and at that time learned that he had already heard the news through his channels and had placed the 9th Division on high alert. After receiving additional information and checking for accuracy of details, etc., we passed along the sad news to the American Detachment at breakfast that morning. It was indeed a solemn day in the 9th Infantry Division Advisory Detachment.

The South Vietnamese seemed to take the death of President Kennedy even harder than the recent death of their own President. Most were upset and afraid that the Americans would pack up and return home immediately. I must have assured fifty Vietnamese that day that we were going to stay, but non of them believed me."
